About this text

The earliest surviving work of dramatic theory. Defines tragedy, introduces catharsis, and argues that poetry is more philosophical than history.

Tragedy is an imitation of an action that is admirable, complete, and possesses magnitude; in language made pleasurable; with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish the catharsis of such emotions.

Poetry is something more philosophic and of graver import than history, since its statements are of the nature rather of universals, whereas those of history are singulars.
