The Intellect
The Active Intellect illuminates the mind the way the sun illuminates the eye. Islamic philosophers debated its nature for four centuries.
Al-Kindi, Al-Farabi, and Ibn Sina each proposed a theory of how the human mind connects to universal truth. They drew on Aristotle's distinction between potential and actual intellect, then layered Neoplatonic emanation on top. The result: a cosmic hierarchy of intellects descending from God, with a single Active Intellect that makes human knowledge possible. When your mind grasps a universal concept, it is being illuminated from above. Al-Ghazali attacked this framework. Ibn Rushd defended it. The debate shaped both Islamic and European philosophy for centuries.
